Best Birthday Present Ever!

TADW student Kaitlyn Rickaby happened to be celebrating a birthday on the first day of the 2010 workshop. Of course, the entire company joined in for a rousing version of "Happy Birthday"!

Now Arriving in TADWania!

Bright and early this morning, the students of the 53rd Teenage Drama Workshop met in the Little Theatre (with the set for "Alice in Wonderland" in the background) for their first all-company meeting! After welcoming remarks from Executive Director Doug Kaback, the students were introduced to the staff and to each other. With new friendships already forming, students then split into their "levels" for tours of Nordhoff Hall and for their first classes.

Enrollment is now open for the 53rd Teenage Drama Workshop at CSUN. If you read through this blog, you'll see how much fun we had last summer. And more fun is in store for 2010!

This year, the musical will be "Seussical" directed by Ronnie Sperling. The play will be "Alice in Wonderland" directed by Corky Dominguez. Of course, we'll also have the annual 10-Minute Play Festival, featuring work by TADW playwrights, and the Munch & Crunch musical theatre review.

Masai Warrior Chant Closes 52nd TADW

It opened the 52nd Teenage Drama Workshop and in keeping with tradition it has now closed the 52nd Teenage Drama Workshop. Led by Prof. Doug Kaback, students performed the "Masai Warrior Chant" at the conclusion of Munch & Crunch on Aug. 2. As the chant ended, the students bid farewell to this summer's workshop, but they left with many lifelong friends and memories.

Musical Theatre Honors Broadway's Majestic Theatre

In a rousing Munch & Crunch musical review, the students in the Teenage Drama Workshop's musical theatre elective paid tribute to Broadway's Majestic Theatre on Aug. 2. Performing top hits from shows that played at the Majestic, students sang and danced to numbers from "The Music Man," "Grease," "Phantom of the Opera" and many more. The program was directed by Ed Archer and choreographed by Candy Sherwin. Also featured at Munch & Crunch were selected numbers from TADW voice and dance classes.

Award to Sarah Martellaro

The Teenage Drama Workshop presented the Sam Loeb "Spirit of TADW" Award at Munch & Crunch on Aug. 2 to Sarah Martellaro. Named for the late Sam Loeb, a TADW student who lost his battle with cancer, the award is given annually to the student who best exemplifies the spirit of the Teenage Drama Workshop. The award is funded annually by Loeb family members and friends. With the award, Martellaro received a full scholarship for next year's 53rd Teenage Drama Workshop. Award to Evan Sanford

The Teenage Drama Workshop presented the Maryellen Clemons Award at Munch & Crunch on Aug. 2 to Evan Sanford. Named for a longtime TADW director and instructor, the Maryellen Clemons Award is given to the student "you would love to have a workshop full of" according to TADW dance teacher and choreographer Candy Sherwin, who calls Clemons her mentor. Awards to Kailey Short, Wesley Rodriguez

The Teenage Drama Workshop presented two awards at Munch & Crunch on Aug. 2 to students who will attend California State University, Northridge to study theatre. Winning the Alan Oldham Award was Kailey Short. Winning the Dr. William Schlosser Award was Wesley Rodriguez. The 52nd Teenage Drama Workshop production of "Pinocchio" closed today to huge applause. As soon as they changed out of their costumes, all members of the cast joined the crew to "strike the set" and return the Little Theatre to its pristine, pre-show state.
